Pre-2017: D1 Standard

Post-2017: D2 Standard

After the convention’s enforcement in 2017, ships are now required to meet the D2 standard. This standard is more stringent and mandates the use of approved BWTS/BWMS to eradicate harmful organisms in ballast water. The D2 standard specifies the maximum amount of viable organisms allowed in discharged ballast water and requires ships to have onboard treatment systems that meet these criteria.
